Congregational United Church of Christ is now in its second century of Christian service. It was founded in 1900 as part of the old Christian Church, which dates back to 1794. Its organizational meeting was held on June 3, 1900. By the end of that year, it had a membership of 27 and was holding services in the building of the Greensboro Meeting of Friends (Quakers) at 115 East Lee Street. Its first building, completed and occupied in early 1903, was at the corner of Walker and Eugene streets. The first service in the present building at 400 West Radiance Drive was June 22, 1952. The sanctuary was remodeled and opened in September of 1993. The church has an active membership of about 300. Our Denomination

The United Church of Christ, though formed only in 1957, has roots that make it one of the oldest denominations in American Protestantism—it is a union of the Congregational Christian and Evangelical and Reformed churches of the United States. The Congregational and Christian churches had merged in 1931, with origins dating back to the earliest American communities. The Reformed Church in the U.S. and the Evangelical Synod of North America had merged in 1934, with history dating back equally as far. The UCC’s 1.5 million members, descended largely from Pilgrims, Puritans and German settlers, belong mostly to traditions begun by the 16th century reformers of Europe and England. They belong to some 6,200 congregations across the nation. Close to 300 churches and about 50,000 members of the UCC are located in the Southern Conference, which includes all of North Carolina and Tidewater Virginia.
